Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, mixes older city neighborhoods with the planned city of Naya Raipur nearby. Most visitors can cover the main sights in a day, and getting around is easier with a vehicle because the attractions are spread out. This guide covers the main places to visit, a half-day and full-day plan, the best time of year and practical tips. YSR Cab Services is a Raipur-based cab operator and the plans below are samples you can adjust.

Places to visit in Raipur
Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum. One of the older museums in the region, established in 1875 by Raja Mahant Ghasidas of Rajnandgaon. It holds tribal artifacts, sculptures, coins and inscriptions related to the history and culture of Chhattisgarh. It’s in the Civil Lines area near Ghadi Chowk. Allow about an hour, and note that photography is restricted in some galleries.
Vivekananda Sarovar (Budha Talab). A large lake in the middle of the city, popular for evening walks. It suits a short, relaxed stop after the museum.
Mahamaya Temple and other city temples. Raipur has several well-known temples. If temple visits matter to you, tell us when booking so we can plan around their darshan timings.
Naya Raipur
Naya Raipur, officially called Atal Nagar, is the planned capital area of Chhattisgarh, built a short drive from the old city. It has wide roads, government offices, parks and several visitor attractions.
- Purkhouti Muktangan. An open-air cultural park that presents the lifestyle, homes, crafts and traditions of tribal communities of Chhattisgarh through life-size figures and displays. The name roughly means “ancestral courtyard”. Wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are large.
- Nandan Van Zoo and Safari. A zoo and safari area in Naya Raipur, a good choice for families with children. Check opening days before you go, as zoos often close one day a week.
- Other stops. Depending on your interests and time, customers also ask about the Musical Fountain, Marine Drive and the cricket stadium in Naya Raipur. Confirm that a place is open to visitors before adding it.
Half-day and full-day plans
These are sample plans. Opening hours change, so confirm them before the day.
Half-day (4–5 hours), city circuit
- Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum (around opening time)
- Vivekananda Sarovar
- A temple or local market, as time allows
Half-day (4–5 hours), Naya Raipur
- Purkhouti Muktangan
- Nandan Van Zoo and Safari
Full day
- Morning: Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum
- Late morning: Drive to Naya Raipur (allow around 30–45 minutes) and visit Purkhouti Muktangan
- Afternoon: Lunch, then Nandan Van Zoo and Safari
- Evening: Return to the city and stop at Vivekananda Sarovar
Travelling with children or senior travellers? Choose one circuit instead of the full day, and add rest breaks.
Day trips from Raipur
Two popular places are better as separate day trips rather than part of the city plan:
- Rajim, a temple town near the meeting point of rivers, about an hour or so by road. It’s known for the Rajiv Lochan Temple.
- Jatmai and Ghatarani, a waterfall and temple area roughly 85 km from Raipur. Visit in or just after the monsoon for the best water flow, and check local conditions first, as access can change.
Best time to visit
October to March is usually the most comfortable time for outdoor sightseeing. Summers are very hot, so keep the plan lighter, start early and carry plenty of water. During the monsoon, roads and waterfall areas can be affected by rain, so check conditions before you travel.
Practical tips
- Check timings and closing days for museums, the zoo and temples before you leave.
- Carry water, sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes and cash for small entry fees or parking.
- Dress modestly for religious sites.
- Allow flexibility. Traffic and queues can change the schedule.
- Start early for the full-day plan so you reach the zoo with enough time.
